Shure wireless bands: G, H, J, K, L and X explained
Shure names its bands with a letter for the starting frequency and a number for the product family: G bands start at 470 MHz, H at 534, J at 572, K at 606, L at 626 or 632, P at 710, Q at 470 and X is the 902–928 MHz ISM band. The G, H and Q bands sit entirely inside legal US spectrum; J bands run past 608 MHz and lose everything above 616 MHz; K and L bands are legal only in narrow slivers around 606–608, 614–616 and 653–663 MHz; and the P bands at 710–782 MHz have no legal US use at all. The letter tells you the frequency, the number tells you which family the band was cut for.
Shure band names look cryptic until you notice they are just an address. The letter marks where the band starts, the two-digit number marks which product family it was cut for, and a trailing letter marks a sub-band split. Once you can read the label you can tell at a glance whether a used receiver is worth owning in the United States.

PSM in-ear bands
IEM transmitters sit on the same spectrum map as everything else, and they are frequently the forgotten half of a coordination. A PSM pack in a band that no longer exists legally is the same problem as a mic in one.

What the wide bands buy you
The 64 MHz bands — G53, H50, J53 and their siblings — cover roughly two and a half times what a 25.5 MHz block does. That matters most when the same package has to work in more than one city, because a wide band lets you slide the whole plot away from an occupied TV channel instead of renting different gear. The catch is that a wide band crossing 608 MHz is not as wide as it looks: J53 advertises 572–636 MHz and delivers 36 MHz of legal tuning plus a 2 MHz sliver.
Shure was also first to market with a WMAS product, the Axient Digital PSM announced in October 2024, using the wideband device class the FCC authorized in FCC 24-22. That is a different way of dividing the same spectrum rather than new spectrum — WMAS explained covers what it changes and what it does not.
Buying and renting
- G and H bands are the safe purchase.
470–598 MHzis legal in every US market, and the only question left is local TV occupancy. - J bands are a good deal if you price them for their legal half.
572–608 MHzis genuinely useful spectrum; the range printed on the box is not what you get. - K, L and P bands should be treated as export or parts stock.

Legal nationwide with no license, no interference protection, and a lot of neighbours — see working above 700 MHz.
Whatever letter is on the label, the operative question at call time is which TV channels inside that range are occupied at the address. Start with scanning and walk testing, and if you are running a full bag see coordinating frequencies in a multichannel bag.

- The letter marks the bottom of the tuning range: G starts at 470 MHz, H at 534, J at 572, K at 606, L at 626 or 632, P at 710 and Q at 470. X is the exception — X52 is the 902–928 MHz ISM band rather than a TV-band range.
- Which Shure bands are still legal in the US?
- The G, H and Q bands are fully legal because they stay within 470–598 MHz. J bands are usable up to 608 MHz plus the 614–616 MHz sliver, K and L bands only in narrow windows around 606–608, 614–616 and 653–663 MHz, and the P bands at 710–782 MHz are not legal at all.
- What is the difference between G53, G54 and G55?
- Nothing spectrally — all three cover 470–534 MHz. The two-digit number identifies the product family the band was cut for rather than a different frequency range, so a G53 and a G55 occupy the same spectrum.
- Can Shure K53 or L54 gear still be used?
- Only in slivers. K53 spans 606–678 MHz, of which just 606–608, 614–616 and 653–663 MHz are legal; L54 spans 632–696 MHz, of which only 653–663 MHz is legal. Everything else in those ranges is 600 MHz service band spectrum sold to mobile carriers.
